Words of Inspiration and Motivation

Here are several quotes from some contributors to the early education sectors.

"Experts generally agree that taking all opportunities to read books and other materials aloud to children is the best preparation for their learning to read. The pleasures of being read to are far more likely to strengthen a child's desire to learn to read than are repetitions of sounds, alphabet drills, and deciphering uninteresting words."
-Lilian Katz ( Quote from the article "Should Preschoolers Learn the Three R's?" in Parents Magazine (1990))

"Dispositions are learned primarily from people who have them, so we must ask: Can the dispositions we want children to have be seen by them in us?"
-Lilian Katz ( Quote from the article "What Are Appropriate Goals for Early Childhood Education?"This article is  from her talk to Winnetka early childhood professionals at the Alliance's Networking Event on Jan. 28, 1993.)

"Empathetic reciprocity emphasizes each individual's uniqueness and judges the rightness or wrongness of our professional decisions in terms of the impact of our decisions on meeting a person's need for love, fulfillment, and respect. The more a decision honors the whole person, the more it is morally defensible."
-Ann P. Turnbull ( Quote from the paper "Stepping Back From Early Intervention: An Ethical Perspective" from the Journal of Early Intervention (October 1985)

"I believe that we need to start during the early intervention years and continue throughout the family life cycle with practical information for families on how to initiate and carry out conversations on very sensitive topics."
- Ann P. Turnbull (Quote from her President's Address 2004: "Wearing Two Hats" in Mental Retardation)

"(I have) the passion to make sure that all children are taught in environments and in ways that truly nurture their ability to grow and develop to their fullest ability."
- Louis Derman-Sparks from the video The Passion for Early Childhood

"The fact that we had so many teens participating and that they were genuinely interested in what we had to offer, I thought, this is what its all about. This is what drives me to do what I do."
"I think my passion comes from wanting to make a difference."
-The preceding two quotes were from Raymond Hernandez from the video The Passion for Early Childhood.

I think it's true. Children can learn from and relate to books much better when they are being read to. Plus reading stories is much more fun than practicing any kind of drills with letters.
